Winter weather can be beautiful, but knowing the difference between hypothermia & frostbite is key! ❄️ Hypothermia affects your whole body, slowing vital functions. Frostbite freezes extremities, causing lasting damage. Stay safe by recognizing the signs early! 🌨️

ypothermia and frostbite are both cold-related injuries, but they affect the body in different ways. Here's a breakdown of their key differences: Hypothermia Definition: Hypothermia occurs when the body's core temperature drops below 95°F (35°C), typically due to prolonged exposure to cold weather or water. Body's Response: The body loses heat faster than it can produce, causing systems to slow down. The heart rate, breathing, and overall function decrease as the body tries to conserve energy. Symptoms: Shivering (early sign) Confusion, slurred speech, and lack of coordination Fatigue or drowsiness Weak pulse or slow breathing Severe cases: Unconsciousness or loss of motor skills Affected Areas: Hypothermia impacts the entire body, not just specific parts. Treatment: Gradual rewarming through warm blankets, fluids, and warm (not hot) environments. In severe cases, medical intervention may be required, such as intravenous warm fluids. Frostbite Definition: Frostbite is the freezing of skin and underlying tissues, typically occurring when temperatures drop below 32°F (0°C). It most commonly affects the fingers, toes, nose, and ears. Body's Response: Blood vessels constrict in response to extreme cold, limiting blood flow to the extremities and causing ice crystals to form in the cells. This leads to tissue damage. Symptoms: Numbness or a "pins and needles" sensation Red, white, or blue skin color (depending on severity) Hard, waxy skin Blisters or blackened, necrotic skin (in severe cases) Affected Areas: Frostbite primarily affects extremities such as fingers, toes, ears, and nose. Treatment: Rewarming the affected area slowly (e.g., by soaking in warm water), avoiding rubbing the area, and seeking medical help. In severe cases, amputation may be necessary if tissue damage is extensive.

9 months ago, Paisley
Safety Sundays with paisley. Woof! Here are some Christmas tree safety tips from your favorite City Hall dog: Water the tree every day to keep it fresh and less likely to catch fire—no dry trees, please! Keep the tree far away from heaters or fireplaces—those things are way too hot for us! Check the lights for frays and always turn them off when you're out or asleep—let’s keep the house safe. Make sure the tree is sturdy so it doesn’t tip over!
